Phishing Scams

A Guide for Parents - Don’t get hooked by a phishing scam.

QUICK FACTS
What is the purpose of the scam: To gain your personal information such as account numbers.
Watch-outs
Emails asking you to click on a link to update your account information.
Phishing is a method used by fraudsters to try to get your personal information, such as your username and password, by pretending to be a site you trust. They will send you emails that appear to be from legitimate sites (ie. MySpace, FaceBook, etc.) that ask you to click on a link in the email. Do not click on the link. When in doubt call the number listed on the website (not on the email).
  • Excercise caution with all emails you receive.
  • Protect your personal information.
  • Share credit card or other personal information only when you're buying from a company you know and trust.
  • Read the fine print. Get all promises in writing and review them carefully before you make a payment or sign a contract.
  • Never pay for a “free” gift. Disregard any offer that asks you to pay for a gift or prize. If it's free or a gift, you shouldn't have to pay for it. Free means free. This is law.
