How to talk with your children about online safety

Just talk...

QUICK FACTS
Appropriate age range:

13 years or older

Who uses Social Networking sites: Varies greatly
Why use Social Networking Sites: Communicate with friends and expand your circle of friends
Watch-outs:
Internet Bullying & posting too much information
In conversations with your teen, steer the subject to online internet safety and why it's important.

If you can ingrain this information in your children they’ll be more likely to understand the dangers and practice safe online computing practices. By letting them know about potential dangers in their environment they’ll know what to do when confronted with them.

You may need to talk with your children earlier than you might expect. 25% of five-year olds use the Internet and preschool children are the fastest growing group online. Children between the ages of 6 and 17 are on the Internet at home for an average of 3 hours each day.

Introducing the topic of Internet Safety If you hear something you don’t like (perhaps a friend has been talking with a stranger in an online chat room), it is important not to react in any way that cuts off further discussion. If he seems defensive or assures you that he does practice safe internet usage, ask him why he thinks people don't engage in safe internet usage. If something interrupts your conversation, pick it up the next chance you get.
